Collaboration study led by the National Institute of Infectious Diseases on the molecular epidemiology of human metapneumoviruses was published.

We sequenced human metapneumovirus (HMPV) isolates in eastern Japan before and after the COVID-19 epidemic. Subgroup A HMPV was detected from 2017 to 2019, with most virus strains having a duplicate insertion sequence of 111 bases in the G gene; after the COVID-19 outbreak, subgroup B viruses were detected but not subgroup A viruses.
